Celebrating apprentice progression: making the pledge a reality
We're celebrating National Apprenticeship Week (6-10 February). Come and join us to meet apprentices and ex-apprentices who have progressed to higher education and hear their stories.
This FREE event is for:
-
staff who work with apprentice including trainers, tutors, mentors and advisers
-
people who provide information advice and guidance to apprentices and would-be apprentices
-
higher education lecturers and admissions tutors, especially those with an interest in foundation degree, HNC/D course or other work-based learning programmes
-
those working with higher apprentices, supporting students post-apprenticeship and those interested in routes into and through higher-level learning
The aim of the conference is to celebrate the achievements of apprentices in Sussex who have progressed to education at level 4 or above and to illustrate the progression choices open to advanced apprentices thanks to the Apprenticeship Admissions Pledge signed by nine higher education providers in Sussex.

What is it about?
In Sussex, there are around 50 organisations (FE colleges and independent training providers) training thousands of apprentices in disciplines as varied as engineering, childcare, business administration and accounting. For most, their formal training finishes at level 3 with an advanced apprenticeship. In fact, it is reckoned that no more than 11% of Sussex apprentices ever progress to higher education which compares very poorly to students of other level 3 qualifications. But there are inspiring examples of those that do through studying foundation degrees, higher national certificates/diplomas or higher apprenticeships. Why is it that so few avail themselves of these opportunities?
As part of Sussex Learning Network's contribution to National Apprenticeship Week, this event will showcase success and offer access to resources to help better advise apprentices on their options.
